The Story
Born in Sydney, Australia into a musical family, Chris was drawn to the piano at age five and later picked up the guitar at the age of nine. Finding inspiration in a variety of music, his early influences ranged from Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, to Stevie Wonder and George Benson.
"I always knew music & sound would be my calling - there was never any question about that. Several pivotal moments of sonic inspiration at a young age fueled my passion and remain vividly in my mind to this day. Despite growing up in a small town near the Blue Mountains I had the opportunity to see Tommy Emmanuel, Chain, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, ELO, B.B King, AC/DC, and Deep Purple live in concert during those impressionable years. Those incredible experiences lit a fire in me, and I knew that THIS was what I wanted to do.
I became a human sponge, absorbing everything I could and practiced the guitar up to 10 hours a day. Initially I would compose my own music and record everything old-school on a 4-track tape recorder, right up until the digital revolution hit. The evolution to computer-based recording software subsequently sparked a fascination and obsession for synthesis, programming, recording and engineering all things audio.
In the years I've been a session musician, I simultaneously delved deeper into composition, arranging, orchestration & sound design. Stravinsky, Lutoslawski, Ravel, Debussy, Ralph Vaughan-Williams and Aaron Copland became major influences, as well as film composers Bernard Herrmann, Howard Shore, Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. Sound designers Randy Thom, Ben Burtt, Gary Rydstrom & Walter Murch are constant sources of inspiration. Beyond the world of music and sound, I find inspiration in the sciences, literature, philosophy, psychology and nature itself.
The power of music and sound to contribute to the immersion, emotion, perspective & dynamic narrative arc of the visual & interactive is the driving force that motivates me. The desire to compose, perform, discover, create & collaborate is constant. Music & sound are amazing vehicles for self-expression and creativity, but for me, the real magic happens when you come together with other people and create something you never would have realized on your own. A melding of perspectives to create something far greater than the sum of its parts.”
